History of Saint Ann The religious and cultural life of Hoboken has run broad and full from the beginning.  As the population grew and persons of varied nationalities came to reside in the area, so also grew the necessity of providing facilities to care for the spiritual needs of the people.  Thus, the Most Reverend John J. O’Conner, Bishop of Newark, canonically erected our own beautiful Parish of Saint Ann, Hoboken, New Jersey, in May 1900, to administer to the spiritual needs of the growing Italian-speaking populace.

On November 1, 1925, at the Feast of All Saints, Monsignor Eugene Carroll officiated at the laying of the cornerstone of the new Church of Saint Ann.  The new church was opened on December 12, 1927.  The magnificence of the temple, remarkable for its pure Romanesque architecture, the monumental marble alter towering in the sanctuary, the elegance of the stained-glass windows and the flood of light effused throughout the interior of the church coupled with the majestic harmony of the organ music and the rhythmic concert of the bells ringing in the steeple, dazzled the senses and inspired one and all to praise and glorify God.

Father Mauro Landini arrived in 1947 and began a renovation to make the church more beautiful.  Bronze chandeliers were installed, and a sector of the rectory’s garden was transformed into a square in the middle of which was placed an inspiring statue of our Lady of Fatima made in Italy of Carrara marble.  In 1973, Father Richard Baranello had an air-conditioning system installed in the church providing a haven for worship and prayer untroubled by the weather.  In recognition of the 85th Feast of Saint Ann, the Hoboken City Council at the request of Mayor Anthony Russo voted unanimously in 1995 to rename the section of Jefferson Street in front of the church and Friary as “Saint Ann’s Square.”

Following in the footsteps of their founder, Saint Francis of Assisi, the Capuchin Franciscan Friars are called to a life of dedication and service.  The spirit of unity and community has been a hallmark of the Church of Saint Ann from its beginning as an Italian-American parish and continues to be so today.  Liturgical functions, sacramental programs and the celebration of traditional feasts of the Universal Church and of the Parish of Saint Ann continue to provide the opportunity for spiritual growth and community.

A culmination point is reached each year with the celebration of the Feast of Good Saint Ann, patroness of our parish, when the parish spirit of community is renewed in a grand manner.  The past and present are linked as former parishioners return home in large numbers to join with present parishioners in the expression of a deep and abiding faith in, and love of, God and devotion to Good Saint Ann—to join together in the celebration of our feast.

The Parish of Saint Ann is typical, and yet unique.  It is a family parish, and it is a parish family where the parishioners combine their efforts to provide a wholesome spiritual, social and recreational climate in which each member of the family can develop to the fullest his spiritual and temporal potential.  Saint Ann’s Parish has successfully met the challenges of the past and will likewise meet those of the future, where its greatest works lie.  Saint Ann’s Church stands as a magnificent temple of worship reflecting the solidarity of a people with a deep and abiding love for their God and respect and loyalty for their church.

BAPTISM
For Catholics, the sacraments of Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. Weather we are baptized as infants or adults, Baptism is the Church's way of celebrating and enacting the Embrace of God.

Parents should contact the Parish Office at the birth of the child to schedule an interview and to register for the required parents' and godparents' baptismal preparation session.
The sessions are held on the 2" Saturday of the month at 10:30 am in the rectory.
Baptisms on the first Sunday of the month will be celebrated at the 12 pm Mass. On the third Sunday of the month it will be celebrated at 1pm.
EUCHARIST
Catholics believe the Eucharist, or Communion is both a sacrifice and a meal.  We believe in the real presence of Jesus, who died for our sins.  As we receive Christ's Body and Blood, we also are nourished spiritually and brought closer to God.

 RECONCILIATION
The Catholic Sacrament of Reconciliation (also known as Penance, or Penance and Reconciliation) has three elements:  conservation, confession and forgiveness: as a result we are called to forgive others.

 CONFIRMATION
Confirmation is a Catholic Sacrament of Mature Christian commitment and depending on baptismal gifts.  It is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation of Catholics.  It is most often associated with gifts of the Holy spirits.

 MARRIAGE
For Catholics, the Sacrament of Marriage, or Holy Matrimony is a public sign that one gives oneself totally to this other person. It is also a public statement about God: the loving union  of husband and wife speaks of family values and also God's values

The parish of St. Ann's Church joyfully welcome you as you prepare for the Sacrament of Matrimony.

The love you have privately come to realize and share will now be made public through a sacred sacrament. We join in the support of family and friends as you undertake a new way of life.

A Priest will assist you in the preparatory steps which will lead to your wedding day. You will also meet with the St. Ann's music director to plan all of the music for your wedding. We assure you of our continued support and prayers. If we may be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The Common Policy for Marriage in all Catholic Parishes in New Jersey requires couples to begin preparation at least one year prior to the planned wedding date. It is advisable for couples to contact the parish before any other arrangements are made for the wedding day.
HOLY ORDERS

In the Sacrament of Holy Orders, or Ordination, the priest being ordained vows to lead other Catholics by bringing them the sacraments by proclaiming the Gospel, and by providing others means to holiness.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK The Catholic Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, formerly known as Last Rites or Extreme Unction, is a ritual of healing appropriate not only for physical but also for mental and spiritual sickness.

This sacrament is available to seriously ill members of our parish at home or in the hospital. Please call the Parish Office to make arrangements.

For legal reasons, many hospitals no longer inform parishes when a member is hospitalized; so please inform the Parish Office that a hospitalized parishioner would like a parish visit.

Please let us know of any homebound persons who would like Communion on a regular basis.
RCIA

Throughout the year, individuals come forward seeking to learn more about the Catholic faith. You may have a friend who is Catholic... you may be dating, engaged, or married to a Catholic...or you may just be seeking information on your own. You may have even been baptized a Catholic but never completed your initiation.

If you are such a seeker, we welcome you! The St. Ann's community invites you to check out the adult initiaion rite here at the parish with the hope that you will find an opportunity to grow closer to God at this time in your faith community. This is a Rite in the Church and holds an integral place in the life of the Parish.

The adult initiaion rite, is a time of prayer, reflection, and learning that allows for the continual discernment of God's will in our lives. No matter where you are on your faith journey, there is a place for you at St. Ann's.
